What to Do with All That Mulch After Tree Removal

Mulch left over after tree removal can be spread straight onto garden beds as a weed-suppressing surface layer, kept as a long-term pathway cover, or removed from site if you prefer not to keep it. Most tree services chip debris on the day, so you have usable mulch ready to go before the crew leaves.

What Are the Benefits of Using Fresh Wood Chips in the Garden?

Fresh chip suppresses weeds, retains soil moisture and breaks down slowly, making it a good long-lasting surface mulch for garden beds, pathways and around established trees. It performs just as well as aged mulch for moisture retention, even though it releases nutrients more slowly. The concern some gardeners raise is nitrogen drawdown, where soil microbes tie up nitrogen while breaking down fresh chip, but this only affects the top few centimetres of soil where the chip sits, not the root zone of plants below it.

Is Fresh Mulch Safe to Use Straight Away?

Yes, as a surface layer. It should sit on top of the soil as opposed to being dug in, and kept clear of tree trunks and stems, where piled mulch can trap moisture against the bark and encourage rot. Fresh chip is also not linked to attracting termites, provided it is kept clear of structures. A layer of fresh chip also breaks down more slowly than aged mulch, so it holds its shape and coverage for longer between top-ups, which suits pathways and ornamental beds that don’t need frequent replenishing.

How Thick Should a Mulch Layer Be?

A layer of at least 10 centimetres is enough to suppress weeds and retain moisture without smothering the soil underneath or restricting airflow to plant roots.

What If You Do Not Want to Keep the Mulch?

A tree service can remove the chipped material along with the rest of the job’s debris, leaving the site clear if you would prefer not to use it on the garden. Stump Pro also sells garden wood chips separately, so if a job doesn’t produce enough for what you need, or you would simply prefer to buy chip than wait for one, that is an option too.
